Nobody likes to be stuck. However, if you’re not careful, your dealership can get locked into a web provider leaving you with few options. In this article, we’ll explore how to not get trapped.
What is a CMS? (And Why Should I Care?!)
Today’s websites are built on Content Management Systems (CMS’s). These platforms make it easy to edit content, add blog articles, and make changes to your website.
There are two types of CMS’s: open source and proprietary.
Most websites are built on open source CMS platforms. This means that there is a large community of developers that support the platform. If you’re not happy with your provider, moving to another provider is fairly easy. The three most common open source platforms are WordPress, Drupal, and Joomla. While each of these platforms have specific advantages and disadvantages, they are all supported by a large developer community.
Proprietary CMS platforms can only be supported by the company that developed them. Some proprietary CMS platforms are part of a larger marketing automation platform. Most proprietary CMS platforms are built by web programmers that thought it would be better to build their own system than use an open source system.
While any given proprietary CMS platform may have some advantages, the real challenge is that you have no options. If you want to change providers, you will likely have to start from scratch with a new website.
To keep your options open we advise our clients to use an open source platform for their website. This ensures that you don’t get stuck.
Which open source CMS is the best?
It depends who you talk to. Generally, if someone is used to working on one CMS, they’ll say their CMS is the best. At Dealer Marketing, we build on the Drupal platform because of security options and design layout flexibility. We also support many dealer websites built on Wordpress.
